By We’re doing something special in Sugar Land, TX this fall. We have a vision for a premium tutoring center experience with ultra-low student-teacher ratios and better integration of technology. It’s innovative, unique and born out of a frustration with a stale industry. Here’s the vision.
For the last nine years, we’ve sought to become the standard in SAT and ACT prep. This fall, we’re expanding that vision to the K-12 academic tutoring space in Sugar Land, TX with a new tutoring center called TutorJack.
The tutoring center space is stale. The centers themselves look like they’re from the 1990s, the worksheets actually are from the 1990s and the 4:1 or 5:1 student teacher ratios are too high to effective. The industry is dominated by franchises that are in the business of selling franchises, not building effective programs.
TutorJack was created to be the modern response to this stale industry. We started by building the program around actual evidence:
- We know students learn best in a 1-on-1 environment.
- We know students learn best when they are given relevant practice and a program uses mastery learning techniques.
- We know students learn best in environments where they have social connections.
A Unique Hybrid Approach
The TutorJack learning method features 1-on-1 instruction blocks alternated with small group practice. This gives students the most effective learning setting possible while still giving them the opportunity to do relevant practice in an environment with other students.
Every session is the pursuit of mastery of one specific concept. Your kid should walk out with mastery of a concept they didn’t have mastery of before. We ensure this happens by having students complete “challenge problems” at the end of each session that incorporate all of the skills they learned that day.
Further, we also have students teach the concept back to the instructor at the end of each session. Over the years at Test Geek, we’ve found that there’s no better way of learning something than by teaching something. We’d have tutors come in with a 1500 who, after a few months on the job, would say they were better at the SAT than they had ever been. Teaching is a powerful way of learning, and it’s perfect in the context of mastery learning because it’s the ultimate test of mastery.
If students don’t have that mastery, we attack the same concept the next time. Your kid will get better.
All of this is guided by a learning plan, which is created using an education-specific AI algorithm that analyzes your child’s initial test. The AI algorithm then produces a learning plan, which is our guide for the next three months.
All of this combines to paint a picture of a tutoring center that isn’t like other tutoring centers. It’s genuine innovation, based on evidence published in peer-reviewed education journals. It’s smaller student-teacher ratios and 1-on-1 instruction. It’s an environment that’s modern and welcoming, not stale and outdated.
